History

Lakewood Vineyards' roots trace back to the inception of winemaking in the Finger Lakes, establishing its foundation in the early 1950s near Watkins Glen on Seneca Lake. The Stamp family, pillars of the community, embarked on their vinicultural journey with Monty and Bev Stamp, alongside their children, crafting wines from the grapes Monty had planted with his father during that era. With resilience, they inaugurated the Lakewood Vineyards winery in June 1989, featuring seven varieties of estate-grown wines.

Continuing this legacy, the Stamp family, over three generations, has tirelessly cultivated and perfected the wines of Lakewood Vineyards, maintaining a tradition of excellence to this day.

Community

The Stamp family have crafted deep roots & earned a profound respect in the community.  Attend one of the many charity events held in the Finger Lakes region, & you’ll likely be greeted with a glass of wine donated by Lakewood Vineyards.  Their employees are encouraged to support our small town community, some of which have started their own businesses with support by the Stamp family.

Lakewood Vineyards also produce about 20,000 cases of wine for other local wineries.  Many wineries in the Finger Lakes region choose to focus their efforts on making wine, instead of dividing their attention to also growing the grapes.  This mutually beneficial relationship has solidified the Stamp family’s recognition as a dignitary of the community.

Wines

Lakewood is one of the largest producers of wine in the region, with about 30,000 cases produced per year.  They have an extensive tasting program and wine club at the winery, ship their wines as well as produce wine for other wineries.  Despite this high production, they show attention to detail for the craft & continue to win many awards.

Lakewood produces a variety of wines made of vinifera, labrusca (local native grapes) & hybrid grapes.  They also produce sparkling wines, which tends to be tricky to find in the Finger Lakes region.  Their most popular wine is their Bubbly Candeo: it’s a prosecco style Cayuga (French American hybrid grape, which is the 4th most popular grown grape in the Finger Lakes region) white wine.  The Bubbly Candeo is a crisp and fruity wine, making it a go-to favorite for everyday wine.

A mix of Lakewood's wines on Seneca Lake

Lakewood produces excellent representations of the Finger Lakes’ common wines: Riesling, Gewurz, Cab Franc & Lemberger.  Another unusual offering is their mead, which is a wine made from honey which is a little spicier & has similar texture to sherry.  Lakewood also produces a more labor intensive ice wine, which the grapes are harvested while they’re still frozen on the vine & must be pressed while they are still frozen.

Stop in for dinner at any one of the restaurants in downtown Watkins Glen and you’re likely to find at least one of Lakewood Vineyards’ wines on their wine list.  While you’re there, you’ll probably run into one of the friendly Lakewood Vineyard employees who seem to be supporting & building the community more than working on the vineyard.

Tasting Room

Lakewood is one of the most approachable wineries in the Finger Lakes.  Whether you’re a master sommelier or looking to taste your first wine, the Lakewood staff greets everyone with a warm welcome & guidance on how to get the best experience at their winery.

If stopping in for a tasting, you will likely be chauffeured to their wine tasting counter overlooking their beautifully manicured vineyards cascading down to Seneca Lake.  Your tasting will be guided by a staffer who is somehow more educated on the wine than you would imagine the owners to be, offering tasting notes descriptions of the wines.

After your tasting, you have the opportunity to take a guided hike through the vineyards, which are available Wednesdays, Fridays & Saturdays at 11:00am from April through September (schedule your hike here). Lakewood Vineyards is one of the only wineries that hosts a Guided Tour and Tasting experience that offers you a behind the curtains look of the impressive operations of making world class wines. These unique guided tour and tasting experiences are available at 1:00pm on Sundays, all year round, and 11:00am on Saturdays in October through March. Reservations are required (schedule your experience ahead of time online - here).
